About

Vision & Mission

A world in which persons with disabilities enjoy full human rights and participate as equals — achieved through their own organisations.

Vision

A world in which persons with disabilities exercise their human rights on an equal basis with others, participate fully in every part of society, and lead the decisions that affect their lives.

Mission

DPI is a network of national organisations and assemblies of persons with disabilities, established to promote the human rights of persons with disabilities through full participation, equalisation of opportunity and development.

Values

  • Self-representation. “Nothing about us without us.” Persons with disabilities speak for themselves, through their own organisations.
  • Cross-disability solidarity. DPI represents all persons with disabilities and reaffirms its commitment to being truly representative, including of persons with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities.
  • Human rights. Disability is a human-rights issue; the CRPD is the framework for law, policy and practice.
  • Equality and non-discrimination. Particular attention to the rights and leadership of women and youth with disabilities, and to those most excluded.
  • Peace and dignity. DPI has affirmed since its 1982 Peace Statement in Hiroshima that dialogue, not war, protects human rights.
